In the latest of our Partners In Practice profiles, you’ll learn how Digital Transformers serves medium-sized organisations that were left behind as finance software helped small businesses achieve big productivity wins.
Thousands of medium-sized organisations are crying out for the kind of automation and efficiency that small businesses take for granted in their finance systems.
That’s the experience of Ryan Pearcy of Digital Transformers, which partnered with iplicit to better serve those left-behind mid-market businesses.
The company works with accountancy practices and their clients to overhaul systems and achieve dramatic improvements in efficiency.
“With every project I do, I track the cost of the time spent on current operations and compare it with what the client could achieve with the new system,” says Ryan.
“On average – taking both small and mid-sized businesses together – they can save £1,600 a month.”
About Digital Transformers
Ryan Pearcy went from an academic background in mathematical and theoretical physics to practising in accountancy. When cloud accounting technology came to the UK, he became a specialist in that area, eventually setting up the digital transformation service at accountancy practice Scrutton Bland.
He also founded Digital Disruptors, a community bringing together experts in the cloud accounting field, and he co-hosts its podcast, Digi-Tools in Accrual World.
“My passion is supporting and growing this entire sector, which is a bit of a Wild West at the moment, with very little guidance, training and accountability for quality,” he says.
“After leaving Scrutton Bland, I set up Digital Transformers to help as many SMEs as possible.
“I mostly go to market through these businesses’ accountancy practices. I’ve shown those practices I can help them build out service lines and transform how they work.
“I’m not doing any traditional accountancy work myself but because of my accounting background, I can deliver a different type of service from an IT consultant. I understand what businesses need to improve and grow.”
‘For many clients, iplicit was the best fit’
Ryan’s work had exposed a gap in the market which iplicit was designed to fill.
“My core knowledge was around the small business systems such as Xero, QuickBooks, Sage Business Cloud, FreeAgent,” he says.
“But increasingly, I was finding clients that didn’t fit with those systems – and for the majority of clients whose requirements go beyond Xero, iplicit is the best fit. The system is very powerful and it’s well-priced, so it became a no-brainer to become embedded as an implementation partner.”
He has been impressed by the iplicit team. “They’re not pushy and their focus is always on finding the right fit for the client. Even when we’ve hit a bump, like discovering something unexpected during a demo, the team just works through it. There’s mutual respect and a shared commitment to getting it right,” he says.
“iplicit has high standards for how implementations are delivered, which I really appreciate. It’s clear it’s invested in making sure the quality is top-notch – and that pushes us to ensure we meet those same standards.”
‘Mid-sized businesses have been left behind’
Those clients whose needs go beyond entry-level systems – but who don’t require the burden of complex ERP systems – constitute a massive market.
“Smaller businesses have seen a lot of benefits from modern tech, but mid-sized businesses often get left behind. Many are stuck on outdated systems like Sage 200, and they’re desperate for better tools,” says Ryan.
“Businesses in this space are starting to demand the automation and efficiency smaller ones already enjoy.”
He sees a big event coming that will force many more organisations onto better systems – e-invoicing. It could become mandatory, depending on the outcome of a government consultation, and is good practice anyway.
“Making Tax Digital forced a lot of smaller businesses onto cloud systems like Xero – and e-invoicing is likely to do the same for the mid-market in the near future,” he says.
“E-invoicing will probably hit that mid-market space the hardest because many of the old systems just won’t cope. Companies on systems like Sage 200 will either need to shell out for expensive upgrades or move to something more modern. That’s where iplicit really shines.”
‘We’re confident in iplicit’

Ryan sees the partnership with iplicit thriving in future.
“When you judge any system, user experience is critical, but you also need to look at the pipeline and what improvements are coming,” he says.
“That’s especially important with a fast-growing business like iplicit. When we’re looking at a partnership, we don’t just look at what it can do for us now – we look at what it can do for us in the longer term.
“There’s a lot of investment that goes into a relationship from our side – and with iplicit, we’re confident about the future.”
